Copy the form to your left onto the blackboard or a transparency.
Fill in each square with a letter or group of letters (such as bl), targetting the the phonics skills in
which your students are working.
Students write down as many words as they can using these letters. (Hint: letting students use individual white boards
makes this activity more engaging to kids..
Points are given depending on the lenght of the words created. 1 point for 1-letter word, 5 points for five-letter words etc.
You can also put prefixes, suffixes, and root words in the box, based on student levels. This strategy is a great resource in the classroom, especially with primary grades. It lets them develop their blending phonic skills and practice writing at the same time.
